Overview

St Jean Pied de Port: feel like a pilgrim!

Built on the Nive river, Saint Jean Pied de Port is the capital of the French Basque Country and located in the southwestern part of France, in the Aquitaine’s region. The city is only 8 kms away from the spanish border and is surrounded by the pyrenean mountains.

About France

Saint Jean Pied de Port is a major step on the road to Santiago de Compostela. You can enter the city by the UNESCO listed Saint James’ gate : this gate is the one taken by the pilgrims on the road to Santiago de Compostela.

You will then discover this medieval city that presents a typical basque architecture, and you will be amazed by the houses from the 16th and the 17th centuries. A wonderful point of view on these houses is given to you on the new bridge stepping over the Nive river.

5 kms away from the city, you will also discover the old roman camp of Saint Jean le Vieux.
