Travel inspiration in Amsterdam and Basel
Amsterdam, capital city of the Netherlands
Amsterdam, the capital city of the Netherlands, is located in the province of North Holland. The city got its name from a dam in the river Amstel and was a small fishing village at its creation. Nowadays Amsterdam is a busy seaport and one of the top European financial centres as well as a major cultural hub. The canals, world-famous museums and historical sights makes Amsterdam one of the most romantic and beautiful cities in Europe. It has all the advantages of a big city: culture, nightlife, restaurants with international cuisine, good transport system. However, the city has also a quiet and relaxed atmosphere largely thanks to its extensive canals, low road traffic, small green parks and flower fields. In Amsterdam, places of interest are never far away, get a bike or hop on a tram for an authentic local experience. Amsterdam can be reached easily by train from other European capitals - Paris, London or Brussels.
Basel, the cultural capital of Switzerland
You have 4 days only? You want to visit more than one country? Basel is the name that should be on your list of towns to set camp. There are about 40 museums, classical patrician houses and medieval churches side by side with modern buildings designed by major international architects such as Herzog & de Meuron or Renzo Piano. Top off your city tour at the Kunstmuseum Basel, known for its oldest public art collection of the world. Basel is the third most populous city of Siwtzerland.
Reviews & ratings Amsterdam - Basel
The service is quite good and has wifi ,that helps a lot for the following trips. But we book the duplex rooms the stairscase is too narrow to bring heavy baggages up:(
Train was delayed for more than 2 hours and had to change train in between. Worst ever.
Unfortunately toilette was not in coupe but outside. Also we did not have any table in the coupe.
Though the beds were very comfortable but the place was quiet cramped. We had two heavy luggages and no place to keep them as they could not be placed underneath the bed.
The eats allocated were behind a pillar so no good for a tourist trip . We had to shift several times. There are many barriers to protect the countryside from the noise so often the view was restricted. Train is the same price as flying so the tourist benfits ws marginal
The fact we could travel over night was great and an experience. We wouldn't change our trip but it's only something we would want to do once! Our room was really hot! Despite the aircon being on the whole time. That's the main discomfort. You can't expect much more in a train but our cabin was tiny and the beds uncomfortable and the share toilet got blocked, eew. All in all, an experienc! Staff were lovely though :)
Good to receive tickets in Australia very quickly. Was disappointed that issued seats had no window..so we moved ourselves to unreserved seats. Closest toilet became very wet and messy early into trip..perhaps staff check would help.
