Your travel by train from Paris to Venice
Taking the train between France and Italy is fast and enjoyable thanks to the Thello trains. Passengers travel overnight between Paris and Venice and the journey takes around 13 hours. Carriages are spacious and comfortable with options for reclining chairs during the day to six berth cabins and private double and single sleepers in night trains. There’s a restaurant car too.
The Thello departs Paris from Gare de Lyon to Venice. Gare de Lyon is on the underground lines 1 and 14 and RER A and D and is easy to reach in central Paris. Allow around 30 to 45 minutes to transfer from Gare du Nord. Venice’s mainland station is called Venezia Mestre but Santa Lucia station is also served by Italian domestic trains. Venice is well connected to the airport and other regional and international trains.

Venice is Italy’s romantic and unique gem, hidden in the water ways of its hundreds of canals and crammed full of secret delights and picturesque scenes at almost every step. Visitors take a ride on a gondola and enjoy the hustle and bustle of St Marc’s Square. Most people enjoy a stroll through the six different neighbourhoods stumbling upon churches, restaurants and little squares and fountains.
From Venice travellers can take the train back into France for adventures or on the Italian train networks for Rome, Milan or Naples and other wonderful places in Italy.
Reviews & ratings Paris - Venice
Me and my family travelled to on Train from paris to London and Rome to Venice. Bought the tickets on line from Pakistan, every thing was very convenient and excellent service.
We had the privilege of travelling from Venice to Paris and used the train to complete our "authentic" experience of the Italian countryside. It was summer during our trip, so the sun set late... wonderful. Thereafter, it was a little tedious and it was very lucky that we had reserved a cabin to ourselves... and that there were only two of us. The customer service officers patrolled the train to help families who were too elderly or had difficulty with the bunks (watch out for the uppermost bunk). CAUTIONS: Our main caution with the train is stairs - people who need assistance with luggage or are frail, the Parisian stations are often without lifts or escalators and in the Italian ones, you are vulnerable to the young men who look helpful but then demand 10-20 Euro for helping you with your luggage! In First class, they collect your passports so that you don't have to be woken at the border crossing. They return them! Skip the breakfast in the morning, it's pretty average fare and... you're in Paris!! Better croissants are just two hours away!!!!!! (our recommendation: try Paul). Taxi from Gare du Lyon to 6e St Germain was 20 Euro.
I have previously travelled on over-night train before in Europe, but I couldn't recall it was that noisy. Perhaps it was due to location of the carriage that I happened to be assigned to (train engine ventilation noises), I am not sure. But I could not rest well at all during the 13.5 hrs. ride. It would be helpful and nice if someone could have told us that a staff would come around to assist in switching the seats to beds when we first boarded the train. (Someone eventually did, but it would be better if we were advised right off the start.)
The journey was advertised as first class. We are seniors and no help was offered either at the stations or getting on and off the train had to manage two large suitcases and two lots of hand baggage also had to take down steps and under subway to get to the allocated platform. The accommodation was very small and stuffy air-con didn't work the train was old and creaked and groaned the whole 13 hours. No cold drinks no ice only a choice of Vodka or Whisky no goes with food came in boxes. Definitely would not travel this way again .
We travelled in a night train from Paris to Venice expecting the train to be superfast (like the TGV). But the train turned out to be just another express train, nothing exceptional. Water bottles were an issue in our cabin as they were limited. The person incharge of our compartment was hardly ever present, except to first take and later give back our passports. In addition to that, there was an Italian lady travelling with her pre-teen who was intent on taking up most of the cabin's space and resources (including our water bottles) which was annoying to say the least. Also she managed to take the lower berths allocated to a couple of other aged Chinese tourists who found it hard to climb up. Comfort wise, as ours was a couchette, we had ample space to sit and sleep. Blankets were provided and there was enough space to keep our luggage (of 4 suitcases). However, the amount we paid for the trip seemed to be very high, considering that we booked the tickets almost 50 days prior to the journey. Overall, I would rate the journey 3.5/5
