Beaune, capital of Burgundy’s wines
Beaune, a little fortified town, is located about 40 km south of Dijon. It is at the centre of the Burgundy wine trade. The wines of the region which are world-famous age and mature in the cellars of Beaune’s prestigious wine houses. 580 hectares of exceptional vineyards produce red wine from the Pinot Noir grape, 380 of which are classified 1er Cru.
Beaune is known for its charming atmosphere, medieval half-timbered houses, Romanesque architecture, the glazed-tile roof of the Hôtel-Dieu as well as various beautiful historical mansions from the 15th and 16th century. Beaune has everything to delight you: the pleasures of wine-tasting and fine food, making it a place that is always a pleasure to discover.
Try the beef bourguignon. Dishes are enjoyed with wine made by one of the winemakers of Burgundy.
Beaune is a not a prime shopping destination, due to its village like appeal. However it is the place to be to buy some great wines.
